Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA)

The Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) is a free application that allows Washington residents, who are not eligible for federal financial aid. Completion of the WASFA will determine eligibility to receive WA state aid and institutional need-based aid.

If you are not considered a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, or choose not to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the WASFA may be the right option for you!

WASFA Information

Students should complete either the FAFSA or the WASFA each year, not both applications. Please note that federal aid, such as Pell Grants or federal student loans, is not available through the WASFA. 

Who Should Complete the WASFA?

You should consider completing the WASFA if any of the following apply to you: 

  • You are undocumented, have DACA status, or do not qualify for federal financial aid
  • Your parent(s) or family member(s) do not wish to file a FAFSA
  • You have privacy concerns about submitting a federal application
  • You or your parent(s) do not file federal income taxes
  • You are in default on federal student loans or owe a repayment on a federal grant
What Financial Aid Can I Receive with WASFA?

By completing the WASFA, you may be considered for Washington state financial aid, including but not limited to: 

How Do I Apply?

    • Income information (W-2s, pay stubs, or tax returns from two years prior)
    • Bank statements and asset information
    • Parent information if you are a dependent student
  5. Submit your application and list the schools you plan to attend

You must submit a new WASFA every year to continue receiving financial aid.

When Do I Apply?

New Student | Application years are based on when you plan to enroll. For example, a student entering in Fall 2026 will complete the 2026-2027 WASFA. 

Continuing Student | The application typically opens in the Fall for the following academic year, so a student entering Fall 2026 will complete the WASFA for 2027-2028 during their first semester.

Submit the application as early as possible and monitor your email for any requests for additional information the Office of Financial Aid may send you.

Are There Any State Residency Requirements?

Many undocumented students qualify for state financial aid under Washington law. To qualify for state financial aid, you must meet , regardless of citizenship status. The Office of Financial Aid at 91直播's University will determine residency eligibility after reviewing your WASFA.

What About Privacy and Confidentiality?

The WASFA is administered by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). Your information is used only to determine eligibility for state and institutional need-based financial aid and is shared only with the colleges you list. Submitting a WASFA will not affect your or your family's citizenship status.
