Background
Abbot Austin G. Murphy, OSB, PHD, STB, MDIV, serves as a Benedictine monk and theologian whose vocation blends scholarly depth with pastoral leadership. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a PhD in Theology (2016), his research centered on Biblical inspiration and Augustinian thought, writing his dissertation titled, “The Bible as Inspired, Authoritative, and True according to Saint Augustine.” He served as Abbot of Saint Procopius Abbey in Lisle, Illinois, from June 2010 to June 2024, guiding the monastery’s spiritual life and governance while continuing priestly ministry and teaching. His academic specialties range from patristics and monastic studies to the theological interpretation of Scripture and theological anthropology, and he has taught in programs at Benedictine College, St. John’s University School of Theology, the Liturgical Institute, and the Vita Consecrata Institute.
Abbot Austin’s publications include articles and reviews in The American Benedictine Review, Nova et Vetera, Pro Ecclesia, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, and Adoremus Bulletin, as well as his 2025 book, Emotional Holiness: Discovering the Divine Plan for Your Human Emotions (Our Sunday Visitor). He presents regularly at academic conferences such as the North American Patristic Society and the Academy of Catholic Theology, and he has given retreats and talks to monastic communities, clergy, and lay apostolates across the United States. His service extends to boards for Catholic schools, universities, journals, and ministry organizations, complementing his ongoing priestly assignments and formation work.
Abbot Austin completed a Master of Arts in Theology, Master of Divinity, and Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC.
